In the 1960s, my great grandparents started a family farm where the Kiamichi river and Crumb Creek meet, tucked into the rolling hills of southeastern Oklahoma. It was not glamorous work. It was long days, red dirt on worn boots, cold mornings that started before sunrise, and a life built from grit. They worked the land, raised livestock, and built something that would outlast them.

They did not chase comfort. They built legacy.

That farm was passed down through the family the same way their values were; through example. Hard work. Stewardship. Respect for the land. Responsibility to the next generation.

My great grandfather once told me, “I worked hard my entire life so you do not have to.”

What he truly passed down was not ease; it was work ethic.

Each generation may not have to fight the same battles they did, but we carry the same standard. We wake up every day striving to honor the sacrifice, the sweat, and the grit that built the ground we stand on.
